How many times have you heard the line: this will change the way you do business? I’ve heard it many times, and some of those times, I’ve been the one promising it. It’s quite common in the web development arena, and it’s a reason there is so much bloat in so many sites. You see, adding a feature to a site makes us look good. In the spirit of building flying stuff
February 13th, 2007
Ever since childhood, I’ve liked building stuff. In particular, I was fascinated with building stuff that might just fly - airplanes made from balsa wood powered by rubber-bands, a ramp on the Scalectrix set that probably wasn’t intended by the designers, a balsa airplane hacked with a motor borrowed from the Scalectrix set in order to attempt powered flight; you get the idea.
Emergence, disruption and so-called ‘competition’

One thing I always find worrying about the local (South African) marketplace is that of lack of competition, and the effects of that on the marketplace. Yes, we have 4 cellular providers but even after all the hoo-ha Branson is trying to cause, it still feels like a closed-loop marketplace. Interesting though, that it’s emergent cheap technologies causing the real disruptions and ruffling feathers, and not competition in the truer sense of the word.
