Post previews & notifications are now enabled in all post sections, and your site now has a fully featured ‘subscriptions center’ built into it.
Popular blogging apps are finally cottoning on how important managing navigation is when you build a site, something we’ve been doing since day one. Find out more how we’ve taken this integral feature further, again.
The more astute amongst you might have noticed we’ve recently released our new range of skins: Charlie 2.0, Bravo 2.0 & Delta 2.0.
Our ‘real world’ newsletter subscribers have tuned into something we don’t frequently update, while back ‘on the web’ only a handful were using RSS to subscribe to updates.
We look at what happens when you switch your skin and introduce the notion of ‘orphaned’ content - and there is talk about a new range of skins.
A drop in the font-size allows us to add more detail without cramping the overall style - but the biggest changes happen further down the line: in the page and post sidebars.
If you run a site there is an extremely good chance it will attract spam at some stage: through either a contact or comment form.
We overhaul the edit screen, the file uploader & the control bar. And enable you to overhaul each of your pages too.
We now have functionality to allow you to upgrade sites and register domains by yourself.
We’ve added a new feature to all photo sections: you can now link to first image in an album and skip the album view entirely.
Lots of small updates, improvements and bug-fixes.
We’ve added a new feature to all photo sections: you can now choose to list your albums in the navigation of your site.
We’ve treated ourselves to a re-design of our own site: we’ve outgrown our own skin and it was time to introduce a couple of new aspects.
With the release of Tank4.0 we wanted to address a couple of those small things that have been bugging us for ages. One of these aspects was the way one added things to a site.
We’ll be talking about a couple of new features next: some of them overdue in terms of what you need, and some overdue in terms of where we see the app go. First up: zip-file uploads.
We’re putting the final touches on to Tank4.0: and if everything goes according to plan it should be available to everyone in the next couple of hours, maybe even sooner.
We’ve been quiet for a while so we thought we’ll share a couple of our ideas to give you an idea of what we’re working towards: a realign of the interface that drives the app.
We’re revisiting Alpha and we’re keen to hear what (other) features you think we should include: keep reading to find out what we’ve got so far.
The recent introduction of the activity tagcloud led to an unforeseen eventuality: any site you create and work on will automatically be linked from our site whether that was your intention or not.
We used both ‘sparkline’ and ‘tagcloud’ in the same sentence. Not bad going so early in the day.
We’re putting the finishing touches on our newest skin - Alpha - and we are looking for a couple of beta-testers.
We’re putting the final touches on a new feature: the much-requested colour picker. Soon enough you will be able to specify and build up your own colour palette and customise your skin further.
Most of the time you spend with our app you will be managing content: your pages, posts, photos and products. But there will come a time when you wander over to the skin tab and happen upon your site’s skin settings.
We’ve made a couple of changes to what we regard as one of the most important areas of the app: the sitemap. This dashboard gives the user an overview of how her site is structured and gives quick access to any content area that might be in need of an update.
If you’ve been following the development of the app you’d know we like re-using certain aspects throughout the app. The bog-standard comment functionality is used not just in a post section to enable comments on your journal, but we re-use it as a quick and dirty contact form. We’ve noticed our users want to take this further and we’ve made changes to accommodate them.
No-one said building a website is easy. Even if a site is simple and straightforward, there are still many variables and factors to take into consideration. Until now, we’ve enabled our users to build their sites ‘from scratch’. While this methodology has worked, it still involves a certain level of hand-holding, and it also allows for users to get it wrong. In short, it clashed with our ‘it just works’ ethos.
We finally managed to get round to putting up our pricing and feature matrix. It marks a slight change in our business model: originally we offered an one month free trial for all sites, but we decided to extend this offer indefinitely, all sites hosted on our development url (within the context of the free plan) will in fact be free. This shift also coincides with how it works in the ‘real world’ of web development: usually a site is built on a development domain, and once everyone is happy with the way it looks and works, the site is then published on it’s own unique domain. We call this the ‘Blue Fairy’ pricing model: you only pay once we turn your site into a ‘real’ site.
Let’s face it, the internet consists primarily of text. The site you build with us will invariably consist mostly of text. As we spend so much time entering and editing text - which in turn translates to content for your site - we wanted to make sure we made that experience as natural as possible.
Tank was originally envisaged as an easy interaction between pages, posts, photos and products. We’ve just finished the 3rd aspect: photos. Although you can easily attach any file (including image files) to a page or post, there was still something missing: a quick and easy way to create a collection of photo albums. We went back to the drawing board, stripped out all unnecessary and time-consuming aspects of album creation, and the end-result is almost one of the best features of tank: the photo section.
We post our thoughts, processes, ideas and progress here.
